"The Government is considering passing a law overriding Eden Park's consent process because of fears it will not be ready for the Rugby World Cup."

OK, so in the extremely short time that we've had the new government officially in power they have:
1. Overridden the Pharmaceutical Management Agency of New Zealand's decision making by literally bypassing their provision of pharmaceuticals and making the Ministry of Health do it instead;
2. Shoved through an extremely serious 90 day probation bill under urgency without any select committee scrutiny;
3. Is now talking about passing a law to overrule the Environment Court and High Court, for a rugby game.
I don't care how big a deal the World Cup is, this just isn't on.
Dear John Key, for Christmas, what I'd really like is some due process and accountability in government - you can keep my two front teeth.

I totally agree. Some of the things being pushed forward under urgency really shouldn't be.
The $3000 fine for parents of truants is making my head hurt. The kids I knew who waged had parents who were in enough debt as it was. That was part of the issue in the first place...
You know - I don't remember items 2 and 3 actually being mentioned that often (if at all) during the campaign.
It's fairly typical of a National government though. Gets into power then starts running things for the rich.
Item 1 is a terrible idea. Pharmac has been a very good way to keep drug prices down and now women with breast cancer are advantaged over any other group simply because they did better with the lobbying. Pandering to lobbying is stupid however good the cause may be.
Item 2: Very scary. You could make the argument that a flexible labour market is a good thing because it lowers the cost to employers of hiring somebody. i.e. compare the US (very flexible) with Europe (very inflexible).
But to do this enormous change without any chance for lobbying? It was *not* highlighted during the campaign so they do *not* have a mandate.
Item 3: Yes it's a rugby game - but very seriously embarrassing if the stadium isn't sorted by then. Business leaders from all over the world would write NZ off as a difficult place to do business.
I don't understand why they couldn't just call it in under the existing provisions of the RMA.
